Detecting Ground Level Enhancements Using Soil Moisture Sensor Networks

چکیده

Ground level enhancements (GLEs) are space weather events that pose a potential hazard to the aviation environment through single event effects in avionics and increased dose passengers crew. The existing ground neutron monitoring network provides continuous well-characterized measurements of radiation environment. However, there only few dozen active stations worldwide, has not been UK-based station for several decades. Much smaller detectors increasingly deployed throughout world with purpose using secondary neutrons from cosmic rays monitor local soil moisture conditions (COSMOS). Space signals GLEs Forbush decreases have identified COSMOS data. Monte Carlo simulations atmospheric propagation show detector is sufficient detect signal medium-strength (10%–100% increase above background) GLE at high statistical significance, including fine temporal resolution. Large scale evaluation of AMSR soil moisture products based on ground soil moisture network measurements

This paper presents an evaluation of AMSR (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer) soil moisture products, based on the comparison with three ground soil moisture networks. The selected ground sites are representative of various climatic, hydrologic and environmental conditions in temperate and semi-arid areas. They are located in the south-west of France, in the south-east of Australia and in ...

Mapping High-Resolution Soil Moisture over Heterogeneous Cropland Using Multi-Resource Remote Sensing and Ground Observations

High spatial resolution soil moisture (SM) data are crucial in agricultural applications, river-basin management, and understanding hydrological processes. Merging multi-resource observations is one of the ways to improve the accuracy of high spatial resolution SM data in the heterogeneous cropland. In this paper, the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) methodology is implemented to merge the follow...

Mapping wind erosion hazard in Australia using MODIS-derived ground cover, soil moisture and climate data

This paper describes spatial modeling methods to identify wind erosion hazard (WEH) areas across Australia using the recently available time-series products of satellitederived ground cover, soil moisture and wind speed. We implemented the approach and data sets in a geographic information system to produce WEH maps for Australia at 500 m ground resolution on a monthly basis for the recent thir...
